This is a nice feature idea but if it clutters up the entry during a round I think I would agree with Ian if it is optional that would be fine. 18 birdies tries to have you enter a ton of info before the shot and it is simply unusable on course.

This would be great for tracking club distances as all the other data (besides club used) us already there

I wouldn't use this option as like simplicity, but if added please give the option to use or not to use club selection
